GeForce RTX 4060 Ti vs RTX 4070 and 4070 Ti – Don’t Buy The Wrong GPU

A few days ago, we published our reviews of NVIDIA’s latest 1080p gaming GPU. After that, I compared the RTX 4060 Ti to the RTX 3060 Ti, its predecessor. Today, we are comparing the RTX 4060 Ti against its big brothers, the RTX 4070 and RTX 4070 Ti. By now, many of us know that 8GB of VRAM is no longer sufficient, especially for the latest game titles. The RTX 4070 and RTX 4070 Ti have 12GB memory. Not only that they offer more VRAM, but they also use a faster GDDR6X memory running on a 192-bit interface. In this review comparison, let’s find out how the new RTX 4060 Ti fares against the RTX 4070 and 4070 Ti.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 Ti vs RTX 4070 and 4070 Ti – Which GPU Is Better?

A quick recap: NVIDIA’s RTX 40 series GPUs feature its latest Ada Lovelace architecture. An AD104 GPU powers the RTX 4070 with 5,888 CUDA Cores. It provides 29 FP32 Shader-TFLOPS of power for rendering traditional rasterized graphics. It also has 184 4th gen Tensor Cores offering 466 Tensor-TFLOPS (with Sparsity) for AI processing and DLSS; 46 3rd gen Ada RT Cores capable of 67 RT-TFLOPS for powering next-generation ray-traced graphics.

Meanwhile, the RTX 4070 Ti has more CUDA cores, higher boost clock speed, and more GPC, TPC, SMs, etc. The only similarity is that the RTX 4070 Ti and RTX 4070 are based on the same AD104 chip, with the latter having fewer SMs, etc. Both GPUs have the same 12GB GDDR6X memory as well, running on a 192-bit interface and a total memory bandwidth of 504 GB/s.

On the other hand, the RTX 4060 Ti uses an AD106 GPU with 4352 CUDA cores, 136 4th gen Tensor cores, and 34 3rd gen RT cores. It even has fewer CUDA cores and gimped VRAM config than its predecessor, the RTX 3060 Ti. The RTX 4060 Ti does have a larger 32MB L2 cache to “make up” for it.

Now, as I mentioned earlier, the RTX 4060 Ti is a 1080p GPU. The “XX60 Ti” was supposed to be a good 1440p GPU as well. Unfortunately, due to its gimped VRAM config and perhaps fewer CUDA cores, its status of being a good 1440p GPU has been reduced to only a 1080p GPU. Meanwhile, the RTX 4070 and RTX 4070 Ti are designed for 1440p gaming, with the RTX 4070 Ti slightly capable of gaming at 4K as well.

RTX 4070 (Ti) vs RTX 4060 Ti – Synthetic Benchmarks

Generally, the RTX 4070 Ti will end at the top of the chart, followed by the RTX 4070 and 4060 Ti. There’s not much to comment on here since these are just synthetic benchmarks and graphics scores. So, let’s find out next how these three GPUs compare in actual games.

RTX 4070 (Ti) vs RTX 4060 Ti – Game Benchmarks

I separated these five game titles above because I noticed that the RTX 4060 Ti trails behind the RTX 4070 and RTX 4070 Ti noticeably. You can see from the charts above that the RTX 4060 Ti has substantially fewer FPS on average, especially at 1440p. I’m not entirely sure, but this may be because of its fewer VRAM and gimped memory spec. I doubt that it having only a PCIe 4.0 x8 interface is the main culprit.

The other game titles below have a somewhat equal gap in performance.

Generally, as you can see from the charts above, the RTX 4060 Ti is performing well in 1080p. However, you can see its weakness at higher resolution (1440p). I didn’t benchmark the RTX 4060 Ti at 4K since I’m 100% sure the gaming experience would be unpleasant.

Speaking of gaming experience, there’s one thing that the charts above can’t show. While the RTX 4060 Ti can achieve above 60 fps in most game titles, you may encounter stuttering or textures popping in with newer game titles like Hogwarts Legacy, Last of Us, or Returnal.

These newer games do and will require more VRAM. Why? One reason is that these PC port games that are originally designed for consoles use a lot of VRAM. The PS5 and Xbox X have 16GB of VRAM. Even the Xbox S has 10GB of VRAM, 2GB more than the 4060 Ti! So, the gaming experience is not the same, and having 8GB of VRAM for gaming this 2023 is no longer sufficient.

RTX 4070 (Ti) vs RTX 4060 Ti Summary Results

Above is the average of the 13 games I have tested. Based on our results, the RTX 4070 is 28% faster than the RT 4060 Ti on average at 1080p. Meanwhile, on average, the RTX 4070 Ti is 53% faster than the RTX 4060 Ti.

Unfortunately for the RTX 4060 Ti, the performance difference between it and the 4070s widens at 1440p. At 1440p, the RTX 4070 is now 37% faster than the RTX 4060 Ti. Meanwhile, the RTX 4070 Ti is 70% faster than the RTX 4060 Ti.

Now, let’s compare their prices, as it may be the primary deciding factor.

Price Difference and Availability

Regarding their pricing and availability, I have good news and bad news. The good news is, unlike when the RTX 30 series GPUs were released, availability with the RTX 40 series cards is a none issue. You can find all RTX 40 cards in stock most of the time. And most are selling at their MSRP, with some higher-end cards, like RTX 4080, being discounted by some retailers. Another good news is NVIDIA didn’t increase the price of its XX60 Ti class GPU. The RTX 4060 Ti starts at $399 and is widely available, primarily due to the lack of demand.

The bad news is that the RTX 4070 and RTX 4070 Ti are expensive GPUs. In fact, even the RTX 4080 is very expensive at $1,200, and it looks like only the RTX 4090 cards are quite the “sensible” cards to buy since they are top-of-the-line halo products, to begin with. But the RTX 4090 cards are really fast, especially the best RTX 4090 graphics cards.

The RTX 4070 starts at $600, while the RTX 4070 Ti starts at $800. So, the RTX 4070 is about 50% more expensive, while the RTX 4070 Ti is double the RTX 4060 Ti’s current price. We’ll we see these prices dropping soon? I don’t think so. If the sales or demand is terrible, NVIDIA may be forced to mark down these GPUs gradually. But don’t get your hopes up.

RTX 4060 Ti vs RTX 4070 and 4070 Ti Conclusion – It Is A Tough Choice

So, between the three GPUs, which one should you pick? Honestly, it is a tough choice. Why? Because between the three GPUs, the RTX 4060 Ti offers more frames per dollar or is the better value. On the other hand, its 8GB of VRAM with gimped specs and PCIe 4 x8 interface is limiting. It can be a deal breaker, especially if you want to play games at high or maximum graphics quality, even in 1080p, or plan to upgrade to a 1440p monitor. Newer game titles also require more VRAM, I’m sure upcoming game titles will only be more graphics intensive, and the RTX 4060 Ti may be unable to keep up.

The GeForce RTX 4070 seems to be a “good” deal for 1080p and 1440p gaming. But it is a $600 GPU, and some may not be comfortable spending that much. Nevertheless, it has 12GB of VRAM, and its VRAM specs are not gimped. And for $200 less, it does offer a better value than the RTX 4070 Ti.

Now, the RTX 4070 Ti is obviously the fastest graphics card among the three. It offers a better value than the RTX 4080, and not only that it is an excellent 1440p GPU, but it can handle games at 4K as well. Just don’t expect to max out every graphics setting, especially with graphics-intensive titles. The only real con about this GPU is its price. $800 is a lot.

We may not end with a definite answer. It’s on a case-to-case basis and really depends on what the user (you) needs or requires. But I hope this article helped you decide which graphics card to get, RTX 4070 Ti, 4070, or 4060 Ti.
